INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
CSI PACKAGED METERING MANHOLES
1.0 GENERAL
Fiberglass manholes must be handled and installed according to these instructions. Failure to comply will void any warranty coverage, and may cause damage to the product. National, State, and local construction codes should be consulted as they apply to the work involved.
2.0 UNLOADING AND HANDLING
Manholes must be lifted, using lifting lugs, if furnished on the unit, or utilizing fabric slings. Under no circumstances may cable or chain slings be used. Proper rigging practices must be observed. Taglines should be used to control movement of the structure during lifting. Manholes should never be dropped, rolled, slid or impacted.
If the manhole must be stored before installation, it must be stored on padded shipping cradles, or on a smooth flat surface free of sharp objects. Chocks, and tiedowns must be used to prevent rolling, and movement due to wind.
3.0 SITE PREPARATION
The excavation must be of adequate size to accommodate the manhole and safe working room for the installing personnel.
Provide a concrete foundation slab. The rectangular slab should extend 1', on all sides, beyond the manhole barrel, and the flume in cases where the flume extends beyond the manhole barrel. The slab should be a minimum of 6" thick. As local soil conditions may vary, final design of the slab is the responsibility of the installing contractor to prevent shifting and floatation of the manhole structure.
4.0 SETTING
The concrete foundation slab must be provided with a smooth troweled surface, to provide uniform support over the entire bottom area. The slab must be level to within 1/8". Grout as necessary.
A cushioning material must be placed on the concrete slab. ( Provided by CSI ) This may consist of three layers of 30 lb. roofing felt, laid in alternating directions, or a 1/2" thick foam pad.
5.0 FINAL SITE INSTALLATION
Secure anchor bolts to the tie downs on the manhole structure. Insure that the flume is installed level, adjust as required. When an anchorage flange is provided, it may be encased in the base pour, or drilled for the installation of concrete anchor bolts. (Use 1000 lb. of pullout force per bolt for design purposes, 4 min.). Seal edges of drilled holes with compatible resin.
All open spaces under the flume structure where it extends outside the manhole must be filled with a non-shrink grout to provide permanent structural support.
Make final pipe connections to the metering structure. Use the supplied stainless steel pipe clamps to secure the boot. Do not use any lubricants to install boot. The incoming pipes must be self supported by their bedding.
6.0 BACKFILLING
Backfill manhole in maximum 12" lifts using imported sand, or pea gravel of max 3/8" particle size. If backfilling with another material, avoid rocks, concrete, or soil clumps larger than 1" in size. It is recommended that the advice of a knowledgeable engineering firm be obtained to ensure that proper backfilling materials and procedures be used to match the local conditions. Do not allow groundwater or surface runoff to accumulate in open excavation around manhole that has not been completely backfilled.
7.0 FINISH
After backfilling, the space inside the manhole, on the sides and under the flume, must be filled with a supporting material, level with the top lip of the flume. The entire space may be filled with a concrete grout, or compacted sand with a 6" cap of sulfate resistant non-shrink grout. Accomplish this in 4" maximum lifts. Care should be taken not to distort the flume surfaces. Internal bracing is recommended to prevent any distortion of the flume. The top surface of the grouted portion may be sloped to drain toward the flume.
On converging top manholes the finish to grade can be accomplished using brick and mortar or concrete grade rings and a cast iron ring and cover. The first level of grade rings should be set in fresh grout to provide an even surface weight distribution.
